According to contemporary standards, burlesque dancers from 19th century hardly deserve any attention, regarding their styling. Big tights, long sleeves and not a trace of a decolletage, today doesn’t sound tempting at all, but in their time it was a provocative outfit.
It is a big question whether any man would turn his head for them, but back in 1890, these ladies were very tempting and attractive. Photo collection of these ladies, burlesque dancers, was gathered by Charles M. Mackahi and showed in State University in Ohio, as he was wishing to demonstrate how much the understanding of beauty today and 120 years ago differs. Burlesque ‘conquered’ United States for the first time when Lydia Thompson came to New York with her group of girls in 1898. Those women were independent, defying to society and destroying all the cliches and standards in time when women were ment to stay at their homes, obeying their husbands and taking care of their children.
